Sweating is a normal process of the human body. Increased sweating occurs
in case of intense physical exercise such as e.g. sports, in stress situations
and hot temperatures.
Some people, however, suffer from increased sweating on the palms of
hands and/or feet or the armpits due to a metabolic disorder. This hyperactivity
is called hyperhidrosis. Triggers can be elevated outdoor temperatures
or emotional stimuli.
Forms of hyperhidrosis are:
Plantar hyperhidrosis:
Strong sweating of the feet, even without socks and shoes.
Palmar hyperhidrosis:
Excessive sweating of the hands leads to moist hands that are often cold
and partially show white-bluish discolouration.
Axillary hyperhidrosis:
Marked sweating of the armpits, associated with unpleasant odour.
This extreme sweating often causes problems in the social and professional
environment. The patients suffering from hyperhidrosis often feel very
uneasy and socially isolated. The massive restrictions of these patients
often also result in psychological impairments.
Injections of botox (botulinum toxin) block the transmission of the impulses
from the nerve ending to the sweat gland and thus prevent increased sweating.
This treatment of skin surgery is particularly suitable for the axillary
form of hyperhidrosis.
